ASTRON optical and mechanical design bureau thermal imagers are equipped with facial biometrics now
After signing a Strategic Partnership Memorandum in August 2020, ASTRON Optical and Mechanical Design Bureau and RecFaces announced the launch of the technology conglomerate of ASTRON TT series thermal imagers and the Id-Me biometric platform.
After joint participation in the international exhibition «ARMY 2020», ASTRON Optical and Mechanical Design Bureau and RecFaces Company vividly demonstrated both the will and capacity to offer the market a new particularly urgent product in the view of pandemic and other diseases — the ASTRON TT series thermal and television body temperature recorder with the added functionality of biometric facial recognition. The ASTRON thermal imager is designed for automated and contactless detection of people with high body temperature at checkpoints. In addition to measuring the body temperature of employees and visitors, the task was to ensure error-free access control over those people passing through the checkpoint. Therefore, it was decided to take the RecFaces biometric Id-Guard solution as a basis and integrate its functionality into Russian thermal imagers. After the integration module creation, the access to the sites comprises 2 verification phases: body temperature as a person’s health status indicator and the conformity of the person passing through checkpoint to the company’s database information (photos, name, gender, etc.). It is possible to configure the access control system to block the access control device (the turnstile, barrier, etc.), if a person does not pass at least one of the phases.
«The demand for the cameras is now greater than ever, it is not difficult to guess why, — says Vladimir Popov, General Director at the ASTRON Design Bureau. The expansion of the system’s capabilities came in handy. We understood that we could not limit ourselves solely to measuring body temperature, as even before the pandemic customers were interested in the people's identification at the site entrance. Thus, in the context of increased population morbidity, this functionality is at the peak of the demand. Partnership with RecFaces allowed us to solve the issues related to the implementation of many projects that required facial identification. And we go further by offering a joint product to other companies».
Companies started the integration of thermal imagers and biometrics this July, and they showed full-featured working software and hardware within the «ARMY 2020» in August.
«ASTRON, in fact, as well as RecFaces, are two major Russian developers with their own R&D centers. Clearly, the integration of two ready-made products happened rather quickly. We have equipped the ASTRON thermal imager with the functionality of our flagship recognition product Id-Guard, which is most often used in facilities with video surveillance systems. It is essential to note that an open API is a very important feature of all RecFaces solutions, which certainly contributed to the efficiency of creating a unified product» — stated Sergey Novikov, RecFaces Technical Director.
Now the ASTRON thermal imager is additionally equipped with functions of people recognition and verification. The Id-Guard functionality allows one to confirm the identity of a person standing in front of a thermal imager, even if their biometric profile is not in the database, determine their membership to the lists of employees, visitors or wanted persons, build a movement trajectory, and send prompt notifications to the system operator about emergencies. Such functionality allows not only to control people passing through the checkpoints and check their temperature but also to identify them. And, most importantly, it enables one to promptly investigate incidents in the company in the event of site access violation.
«Based on different sources of information, we believe that the issue of controlling the morbidity will remain in the next 5 years. Therefore, we plan to further develop our partnership with ASTRON design Bureau, most likely not only in the Russian market. We have already offered our Western colleagues to explore the thermal imagers enhanced with the Id-Guard solution biometrics, and we have received many requests. We assume that Russian thermal imagers with face recognition may be introduced in other countries soon», the RecFaces CEO, Tamara Morozova said.
